"Precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little and there a little." Isaiah 28:10
Recently, I was due to have a road test to obtain my driver’s licence. I’d been feeling pretty confident about it until the morning of the test. In hindsight I think I was seeing the test as a heartless, cold, activity with no love in it: you had to go through the motions with someone who probably hates their job and then you either pass or fail – no middle ground.
However, after doing a search for “driver’s test” on JSH-Online and reading a couple of articles, my perspective completely changed. I realised that the whole basis of the road test was love! Its purpose is to make sure that everyone on the road is safe; it’s all about loving your neighbour. I realised that the reason for the existence of the Registry of Motor Vehicles is love as it’s all about keeping everyone protected.
Suddenly, I had a mission. It wasn’t to go through the motions and pass the test but instead to bring love and joy into the examiner’s day. Before I went to a party as a kid my mum would always say: “In order to get a good time, you have to give a good time.” I was determined to give a good time!
We arrived thirty minutes’ early for the exam. However, I was able to start the road test as soon as I arrived. I chatted with the examiner and made her laugh with a joke. The exam was harmonious. I passed. I was done with the test and back on the road before our allotted appointment time. It was a wonderful experience.
I now try to think about love as the basis of everything I do. It means I always have a mission to express love and, as mum said, it means I get to have a good time in the process.
