A Day of Prayer Through Song

It was with great joy that we welcomed another grandchild into our family at the beginning of the year.

During our daughter’s pregnancy I had been praying to know that both she and the baby, as spiritual reflections of God, were perfect and complete. As God’s children they expressed qualities such as peace, love, patience and joy and could never for one moment be out of the arms of our Father-Mother.

Early in the morning when we knew the baby was going to be born I suddenly felt a little fearful – fearful as a mother about MY daughter giving birth. I quickly realised that I needed to include myself in my prayers too! Father- Mother God who was guiding, guarding and governing this birth was my Father- Mother too, and as an expectant grandmother I also reflected all the qualities of a peaceful and joyous spiritual idea.

So........I spent the day singing! Singing every hymn I had loved and learned from being in the Sunday School as a little girl, as my parents had sung to me and as I had sung to our daughters too. Sometimes my singing was vigorous and out loud, and sometimes quiet and internal.

The morning became the afternoon, and the afternoon became the evening, and there was still no phone call – but the singing continued. I can’t say how grateful I was to know so many hymns ‘by heart,’ and to recognise that each hymn is a prayer and a complete treatment.

When our daughter called to say that they were parents to a beautiful little boy, I was filled with gratitude for God’s love and protection and for the peace that I had found during my day of singing!

Before I went to bed I quietly repeated ‘Mother’s Evening Prayer’ by Mary Baker Eddy for both myself and my daughter!
