Bible Reading Aloud

Recently I went and took part in the Bath Festival’s continuous KJ Bible reading.  My allotted pieces were Deuteronomy chapters 28 and 34 – in their entirety!  I then stayed to listen to the whole of Joshua and the first few chapters of Judges.  It was an amazing experience!

There were lots of NIV Bibles (that’s the New International Version) in the church, so I read along with that one, which was a bit like having subtitles!  Helpful for the meaning of the more obscure bits, and uplifting because it made me appreciate even more than before the beauty of the language of the KJV.

I got so much out of hearing the Bible read aloud in sequence.  I am a complete convert and am going to try to start a group in my church to read the Bible from beginning to end, if they are interested.

It was much easier to get through the “lists” of things in a group, with someone reading them aloud.  I know you can listen to the Bible read aloud online, but the charm of this was listening to various members of the public reading.  It gave it more of a “this is for the people” feel.

It was definitely helpful to hear bigger chunks of the Bible in one go than one does, say, in our Bible Lessons.  I definitely gained something from having a bigger context.  I was in that church listening to a continuous reading of the KJ Bible for four hours - and would have stayed longer if I could!  It was a bit like, being read to as a child is an enabling thing for their own reading, and one usually reads to a child at a level or two above what they could read to themselves.
