Fruits of Study

This isn’t just a testimony of healing, but more a sharing of fruits of study this year.

It’s such a blessing to be impelled to get into the habit every day of studying the Bible and Science and Health and re-reading and contemplating a biography of Mary Baker Eddy on top of the Bible Lesson.

At one point, I had difficulty getting past page 192 in “Mary Baker Eddy: Christian Healer” (Amplified version), where she discusses the importance of Psalm 91. She says that it "contains more pathological and theological truth than any other writing of such few words, other than the Sermon on the Mount." One day, the angel thought came that my middle school Sunday School class should study and memorize this Psalm. In looking up the dictionary definition of pathological we learned that it means "of or pertaining to disease". The students have taken up this opportunity with interest. We have found all sorts of applications of the truths in this Psalm to every day living, including for example the challenge of noisy and disruptive classmates (noisome pestilence in v. 3). It was a joy to hear the words set to music by another 14 year old (see TMC Youth site). We also found it has been an aid in many recent testimonies, as well as to both of the Christian Scientists who were saved from the Titanic. A timeless and effectual help to all God's children!

It is encouraging to have found on several occasions that something just read either in Science and Health or a biography properly answered complaints about fellow Church members. "Before they call, I will answer." (Isaiah 65:24)

In reading Science and Health, it has been most helpful to highlight all the things we should be doing in one color and all the things we MUST be doing in another color. Every day I review the highlights from the previous day. Listening to an audio edition while driving has also reinforced the ideas that have jumped out at me.

I was led to memorize the citation for Association the day the email from Fenella arrived. And that has been an enormous support. Upon hearing of disturbing news either in the world or at church, I have returned "blessing for cursing" and poured out love to those accused of wrong-doing. Whereas in the past I was easily upset or overwhelmed, am learning instead to "overcome evil with good" by reminding myself of what God is knowing and doing.

A few weeks ago I had a quick healing for which I am grateful. About 15 minutes before the start of a training session that I was running at the office, a textbook fell on my nose while returning the book to a high shelf. It was very painful and my nose started bleeding profusely. My first thought was that this was an opportunity for a healing and I remembered the statement from Science and Health "When an accident happens, you think or exclaim I am hurt. Declare that you are not hurt and understand the reason why." So I was obedient to that order. While washing up, the nose was still bleeding, so I prayed with the question "What is man? Man is not matter; he is not made of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements..." This stopped the bleeding instantaneously, and I was able to run the session joyfully and painlessly.

How grateful I am to be a student of this precious Truth!
