God's Timing

Last Christmas my family & I needed to travel overseas to visit another family member who wasn’t well.  The only time it was possible to get flights was on Christmas Day.  Our family had had a very busy year, and had looked forward to enjoying a peaceful relaxing Christmas without any travel.  Yet, it was right to make this trip, and so the flights were booked for Christmas Day.

In the run-up to Christmas I realized I was feeling like my Christmas and holiday was going to be short-changed because of this trip.  It wasn’t that I didn’t want to see this family member - I just wanted to go when I wanted to travel - which was definitely not on Christmas Day!

While driving in the car finishing some holiday shopping, I was listening to a CD with the hymn “Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord to Thee.”  I knew then that I had a choice to make - I could do this the easy way and let God lead me, or I could continue to fight.  I decided to let God take the lead, and started to ask Him what I should be doing next.

I felt at peace and started to look forward to Christmas and the trip.  I realized that God loved me, my family & everyone, and He certainly wasn’t going to short-change us!

It didn’t take long to see how much God was taking care of us.  Due to snowstorms in our area, the first day that the airport was fully functioning was Christmas Day.  If we had tried to fly any earlier, we would not have been able to. Instead our flight was smooth with no delays.  At our destination, a blizzard with 26 inches of snow was forecast.  We had seen how God had protected us the previous day and it just didn’t seem that He would get us to the destination but keep us snowbound.  I continued praying for guidance as the first snowflakes fell when we left the hire car lot.  We were able to get to our final destination, visit with the family member that same day while the snow continued to fall lightly.

Overnight, about 28 inches of snow fell.  The airports were shut, though roads were cleared, and we were able to make the necessary journeys during our visit, in spite of the family member needing to move to several different locations.  Following the blizzards, more than 40,000 flights were cancelled.

The first day our departure airport was fully functioning was the day we were due to fly home.  We returned home safely with no delays.  It was very evident to me the value of having listened to God rather than trying to tell Him what I thought I should be doing! Another blessing of this was that my husband who is not a Christian Scientist, commented to me that far too much fell into place for it all to have been a mere coincidence.  A greater power was clearly at work taking care of us at every point of our trip.
