"Precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little and there a little." Isaiah 28:10
In 1953 I was in the early stages of my first pregnancy. My husband and I lived in a flat above his parents Butchers Shop, a short distance from where my parents lived. (We were both “only ones.”) One day my dad phoned to say my mam was ill. She couldn’t see and kept on being sick, he reported.
I don’t remember all the details but think the doctor was probably there when I arrived. The decision was for her to be taken to hospital in Newcastle. I think dad and I only went twice. She was sitting up in bed with a bewildered smile. The verdict was that she had a brain tumor and they were going to operate.
Although my dad was not a Christian Scientist he had already contacted a practitioner. On leaving the hospital we carried on by train to where the practitioner lived. The first thing she did was cook us a big panful of chips - it was such a cold day. They were the best chips I ever had!
The next time we went to the hospital mam begged my dad to sign her out so that she could go home. (Her hair had been shaved ready for the operation). She did go home and had many, many years of joy at seeing and sharing with us and their four grandchildren - 2 boys and 2 girls.
