Look Away

One day I suddenly noticed ever so many very bright red spots, mainly on my leg, but also elsewhere. Initially I began to feel quite scared. They didn’t feel too good either! At first I was shocked. Then all sorts of ideas as to what they were came into thought, and that they were very unusual.

I realised it was not right to entertain these ideas, and quickly thought, “Look away.” Mrs Eddy says in Science and Health on page 260, “If we look to the body ...for Truth, we find error; for Spirit, we find its opposite, matter. Now reverse this action. Look away from the body into Truth and Love, ...”

I hadn’t remembered these actual words, but remembered their general meaning and intent, from lifelong experience in Christian Science. I was gratefully able to feel calm and confident, and I resolved not to look again at the spots. A couple of days later, I happened to notice there were no remaining signs. Later I noticed a dead mosquito lying in a drop of water in the sink. I thought, it was no more powerful or dangerous to harm me, whether alive or dead!

Shortly after, sitting together with one of my daughters and my mother, my mother remarked that there was a painful swelling on her arm near her elbow, like a burn. My daughter inspected it and said it was some kind of a bite that Mum had been rubbing. I thought, I was so grateful to have dealt with the matter previously. I asked her about it later and she said it had cleared up.

I rejoiced that I had been able to look away from the erroneous material evidence into Truth and Love, to realize my being as a reflection of Spirit God, not material substance.

Since then I also found this passage:

“Belief in a material basis, from which may be deduced all rationality, is slowly yielding to the idea of a metaphysical basis, looking away from matter to Mind as the cause of every effect.” SH 268:6-9
