Man-The Noblest Work of God

As I walk through the gospels, this healing of the demoniac, especially the way St Mark puts it, inspires me, as it is a response to what is going on in the world. It is a testimony to the power of God and the healing that results when thought is turned to man’s oneness with God. Mark 5:1-15

I am deeply convinced that our lives and the world need this Science of Christ! We hear daily of violations and violence and challenges of different designs. Where else can we turn but to Christian Science to enable us to read the signs of the times in our own individual lives and the lives of others.

Evil imprisoned this man of God. Our Saviour went on to overcome it. He triumphed over tragedy. There was no failure.

During my growing up years there was a woman possessed with the same. During rainy days she could seek cover in the wayside along the fences and at night she could sleep anywhere outside. Everyone in the village knew her as “the mad woman.” A moment came after many years and she was taken to the hospital where she resumed her health. After she showed up again, everyone in the village and far off came to witness the truth of this healing.

She looked a very beautiful lady and totally different from the one we used to see. She didn’t know, and has never realized, that she was called demoniac. To her it was an old story told. Her only testimony was that “Jesus saved me.” This was a reality of showing that, no matter what the seeming error is, truth is paramount. This reminds me of hymn 202, “ O dreamer, leave thy dreams for joyful waking, O captive rise and sing, for thou art free. The Christ is here, all dreams of error breaking, unloosing bonds of all captivity.”

If God be for us, who can be against us? If He is with us, the wayside is a sanctuary and the desert a resting place peopled with living witnesses of the fact that “God is love.”

Evil would make us ruminate over so many challenges, rather than rejoice that we are there to prove His power. We can know, as Jesus did, that we are very much capable of blessing and healing, and proving man to be the noblest work of God – not the lowest. Truly man “knows the reign of Soul.”

God does stand keeping watch. We are His. We are in His presence, knowing our safety and protection each step of our way.
