"Precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little and there a little." Isaiah 28:10
A recent testimony meeting in our church reminded me of an example our family had of protection.
Late one afternoon, a man knocked on our door, showed police identification, and asked for my husband. He came back with a female officer when my husband returned from work and our children were put to bed. The officer explained that our home and family had been discovered on a list to be targeted by animal rights activists. The officer felt this was a serious threat, especially as some other homes & families within a mile or two of us had been ‘successfully attacked’ (his words).
After much thought, my husband realised that another division of his company in another part of the country had a 3% stake in an outside group, which in turn had a miniscule interest in a group which could be misunderstood as one supporting animal testing. My husband though was very surprised as he had nothing to do with any of these areas.
The officer provided us with a guide, and then advised us on how to safely open our front door to avoid attack, check under our cars with compact mirrors for small bombs, how to identify if our car fuel tank had been tampered with, and a list to work through twice a day to minimise harm to our home and family. The officer left with the comment that he expected he’d hear from us again soon -- hopefully when we had discovered something, rather than after an attack.
While I was trying to process what the officer had said, a still small voice said over and over to me, “God is your protection”. I was reminded of the many experiences I had had in the past where it had been evident God had protected me, and that this hadn’t changed. God was still protecting me, my family, our home, and even those who were labeled “animal activists”.
I prayed with different verses of the 91st Psalm in the coming weeks, while taking the recommended practical steps. It was interesting that even though our children were about 9 and 7, they didn’t once notice anything different. We had no incidents, nor were any further ones reported near us. Also, we had no further visit from the officer.
Terrorist incidents seem to capture the headlines regularly. I am very grateful though to have been reminded of God’s care and protection for our family in the face of something that could have been very scary. God does love all His creation and He cares for each of us.
