The Effects of Christian Science on My Life

Before I took up the study of Christian Science I was already well conversant with the Bible. But I didn't have clear understanding of its message and how that message fit in my daily life. The Bible was just like any other history book I had read. But when I became a Christian Science student I marveled at how the Bible positively impacted my life, as it did to many characters I read about in it.

Christian Science helped me to understand God, myself, and my relationship to Him. This understanding has been handy on several occasions. Two years ago I was filled with a sense of being burdened, failing in supporting my family when they most wanted my support. I had just graduated from college and expected to get job as soon as possible to help my family. My family and friends had supported me to go through college. Some of my siblings had had drop out of school, when I was in college, to let me use the available resources to complete college. I expected to get a job soon after my graduation to support them back to school. This didn't happen and now the pressure from my family was too much for me bear. I knocked almost in all offices I thought I could get a job without success. At this point I decided to withdraw from my family and friends. I didn’t know what to do and say, I had no answers. I didn't want any more questions about a job and when I expected to get one. I fell into some sort of depression. I started spending most of my time in my room all day. This situation went on for some days.

One morning I picked up my Bible and started reading the story of Moses, how God approached him and tasked him to get the Israelites out of Egypt. At first Moses didn’t accept that task. He was afraid he couldn’t do it. In his view he felt he didn’t have enough resources and qualities to accomplish the task at hand. But with guidance and help from God he successfully led Israelites out of Egypt overcoming the resistance from Egyptian authorities.

Now out of Egypt, he yet faced more challenges; Israelites were filled with sense of lack, of water and food, as they crossed through the desert, blaming Moses for that. The story tells how Moses turned to God for answers and direction on how to handle to the situation. He was led and the Israelites had enough for their needs. The story of Moses refreshed in me the statement by our leader Mary Baker Eddy in our textbook Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.” (SH 494) In the story of Moses there was a clear demonstration of this statement. All the needs of Israelites were met.

Moses’ story awoke me to a new understanding of God, to God’s power and the love he has for his people. God is the same today as He was in the time of Moses. The story showed me how clearly God directed Moses at that time, which He does to all of us today, as then, through the Christ. God is constantly leading us to spiritual freedom from all that materiality and mortal mind is imposing on us. At this point I got peace of mind knowing that I had all I needed to support my family. I had never lacked and I was not lacking. I turned to prayers asking, listening with patience to lead me and show me the direction forward. I got back to my normal life.

It wasn't long after that I got a job that paid me enough to take on all that was at hand. I was able to support my brothers going back to school and support the family in other areas more than they expected. Harmony came back to the family once more and lots of blessings have since been experienced in the entire family. I am so grateful to Christian Science for the comfort and blessings it has brought to my life.
