"Precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little and there a little." Isaiah 28:10
Earlier this month my husband and I planned a day out together exploring the countryside in a neighbouring county.
This involved quite a lot of driving particularly on busy roads and motorways.
As we left a very clear thought came to me to pray for safety and harmony on the roads. I quietly acknowledged that God was guiding and guarding everyone driving that day. We were all under His control and His direction. This word ‘direction’ reminded me of these words in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, wrote this book.
“Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony.” I affirmed that we would only witness qualities of patience, consideration, obedience and alertness from our fellow drivers and indeed this is exactly what we did experience. It was a happy day out.
That evening my brother called. It was unusually late for him to call and I answered: “Hi, how are you?” His reply somewhat startled me as he said he was glad he was safe and well.
He went onto to explain that earlier that evening, as he was driving home from work, a car swerved from the other side of the road hitting his car forcefully. He suffered no harm. The other car was in a hedge, but the driver and her young passenger were unharmed as was my brother. The emergency services were quickly in attendance and dealt with the situation.
My brother did not experience any of the physical after-effects that the paramedics had warned him about. He is not only extremely grateful for all the love, care, and consideration that was shown to him that evening but also for the evident well-being of the two other individuals involved.
This experience really illustrated to be how universal and far reaching our prayers are! I knew that my prayers had helped to protect my brother and everyone else but often we don’t know who is benefiting. We can be confident, however, that our daily prayers for our family, our friends, and ourselves also include a much wider community: the world.
I am so grateful to be able to share this experience that illustrates so clearly: “in Him we live, and move, and have our being.” (Acts 17:28).
