The Test of Harmony

For some time I had been accepting some of the human limitations associated with getting older, and they were very difficult to deny. Many seemed so fundamental that they tried to take a grip on one’s daily activities and human consciousness. There is almost a general expectation that difficulties of all kinds are to be expected, and are even ‘normal.’

I turned to Christian Science to combat these suggestions, but because of their basic human impact I have found it very hard to see my true spiritual being, free from such complaints. It often seems to me that I can clearly see the spiritual pathway reflecting God, but I’m not on it. I’m on a human parallel road with many obstructions and personal problems to be handled in trying to advance towards the concept of a spiritual life.

However, recently I have had a spiritually clear thought which has proved very helpful. I had been looking at each mortal obstacle as it appeared, and trying to see the truth about that error. I’d been looking for individual solutions to individual physical human problems, which I now realise made them more real in human consciousness, and then this consciousness was trying to define my being.

With the help of a practitioner I have been learning to concentrate on the spiritual reality that is here and now, that is everywhere, always, and for everyone. It has no limitations and no obstacles. I found that for me the best understanding of that reality is to realise that my being is a reflection of God’s ideas, which by their very nature must be harmonious. Truth must exist in everlasting harmony, and I am an established part of that truth.

The vital idea that flowed into my consciousness was that if a human thought was not harmonious, it was no part of my being. Harmony is everywhere, always, unlimited, and already established. I do not need to tackle each mortal obstacle individually, because they are all equally unable to express God’s law of harmony. A clear understanding of the falsity of one mortal claim is equally effective in handling all other false claims. So the bottom line is, if it’s not harmonious, it’s not real!

This clarity of thinking has been really helpful. Every thought has to pass the harmony test! If it does not pass the test, I can reverse it to find the true idea of being on the spiritual road of Life, Truth, and Love. As a result I no longer dwell on each physical problem and how I would like it to be put right, but rather look towards the clear spiritual path of being, and see how all real ideas work together to bring harmony to human experience. Only true thoughts have a place on this road. “Getting older” thoughts are not harmonious, and have no mandate at all.
