Thinking Spiritually About the Act of Throwing a Pot

First we have to wedge the clay, pummelling out the air.  The air has to be removed otherwise it is difficult to make a pot on the wheel.  Also when fired in the kiln it can get unsightly, bloating or cracking.

I see this as getting rid of all stubborn or reluctant thoughts, enabling us to hear God.

Next we have to pat the clay into a round shape.

This round form is the symbol of being complete, whole.  We have to acknowledge our wholeness, being at one with God, never lacking, always being Gods complete idea

Now we have to place the clay on the wheel.  This is the most important stage of throwing.  It’s called centering.  If you don’t centre the clay you can end up with it spinning out of control or collapsing.

I see this as our part in getting quiet and being God-centered, not allowing fear, worries or mortal mind to buffet us off our course of oneness with God.

Now comes the shaping process.  In order to shape the pot you have to thin the walls, pulling and stretching them, and getting them ready to be formed.

Here we are ready and receptive to hear Gods ideas, getting rid of humanly imposed thought

The defining and forming of the pot comes now.  For this we tend to slow the speed of the wheel a little in order to be in control of the clay.  Here we shape the pot into the form we require.

I see this as being renewed.  Our true perfection comes into view, and we see we are the perfectly formed image and likeness of God.

The wonders of clay are that at any point before firing in a kiln we can actually soak the clay down, re-wedge, and start all over again

It is so encouraging to understand, that God forms and corrects us.  Therefore it  is never too late to be re-formed.   As long as we stay God-centered we can be witness to God’s healing correcting power.
