"Precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little and there a little." Isaiah 28:10

Change of Base

I seem to have been struggling with mobility, particularly more so in the last months. It seems as though I overcame one hurdle to recovery and free movement, and then fell back. This happened again recently. I was struggling with pain when trying to get from sitting to standing.

I called my practitioner and her response jolted me into the realization that I had not been applying my understanding of Christian Science correctly. She talked about how physiotherapists focus on materiality, and the expectation of pain to force the movement of the body, but that in the practice of Science one should focus on true spiritual reality, and allow that to govern the body.

What I got from this, was a sudden realisation that my thoughts and actions were actually focusing on materiality, thus weakening and draining away my spiritual focus, and expecting the body to improve through physical effort. This was just as I had initially feared when my daughters had persuaded me to accept physiotherapy.

I became clear that I needed to radically change my focus back to an understanding of myself as the spiritual child of God.

I went on to read the lesson (”Unreality”) aloud with my mother. As we read more clarity came.

The result was a painless night, and a new focus back to some lines from hymn 375 that I had used previously, “Love is not the author of discord pain and fear. / We thank Thee Father-Mother that Thou hast heard our prayer.”

Alleluia! Thanks be to God!
