Childlikeness Knows God

Today I looked after my little grandson Rylee who will be 7 in December.  We were having a game of ludo in the conservatory when there was a thump on the window. We rushed to look and there was a beautiful little goldfinch lying on the ground, stunned and not moving.   I gently picked it up and held it.  Rylee was quite affected by this and asked if he might also hold it.  He very gently took the bird from me and to my amazement he said to this little creature "God bless you" - and then "Nana, what does this mean?".

Although my daughter did attend Sunday School, at present she does not follow Christian Science or any other denomination, and I honour this without putting my own views upon her.   However, I remembered that a few weeks ago when I babysat Rylee and tucked him in, I said to him, "Night night, God bless" and he asked what this meant. I explained that God was Love, and blessing him meant that this Love would always take care of him.   He obviously absorbed this, and when his heart was so touched by the plight of this little bird he remembered how to ask Love to take care of it.   He ran to fetch his mother to see the bird, and I heard him come through the house saying "Mum, don't make a noise, he needs to be quiet".  The Bible statement "be still and know that I am God" came thought in effect this is what we were doing!  Suddenly the goldfinch moved his head, shook his wings and flew up to a window. I climbed up and gently brought him down, he wasn't a bit fearful and I then took him outside.  I opened my hands and off he flew into the trees.  Rylee straight away said "Nana we have saved his life" and he was so thrilled with this outcome.   I said to him, "This shows you, doesn't it, how loving that little bird has healed him".

To me it was a great lesson of how that the simplest words "God bless" inspired a little boy of 6 who may not know very much of the Bible, but had learnt a huge lesson about what Love can do!
