"Precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little and there a little." Isaiah 28:10
When I was a relatively new student of Christian Science, I wanted so much to help other people. I was in full-time work then and while at my post I was protecting the “pearl of great price” by silently affirming what I was learning. But how to share? And help people? Would they be put off by the term ‘Christian Science’?
Long before I was accepted for Class teaching by Fenella, I had an opportunity to reach out to someone in need. My office was situated at the end of a long corridor that had fire-doors at intervals. As I walked through one set, I could see one of my young colleagues halfway down the corridor. Even from that distance I could see she was unhappy, just by the way she was walking and looking down at the floor.
This young colleague had everything going for her. She was vivacious, popular, and good at her job. So, what could be making her so sad? I felt my heart aching to reach out to her and I said to myself: “NOW is the time to help.” But not exactly knowing how!
As we walked towards each other I could see that she seemed very troubled. I smiled and asked her if she was alright and whether I could help in any way. This beautiful young girl looked up at me and said: “I can’t seem to get happy.” That was an unusual thing to say. Get happy? Immediately I was prompted to say that there is no need for anyone to gethappy, because beinghappy was natural for all of us. I said that being happy is how we are meant to be and that this was not dependant on being popular or successful or valued humanly.
Suddenly she looked straight into my eyes and smiled. “I like that,” she said, “thank you so much!” Later that day I saw her again and her beaming smile was awesome. I felt so grateful to our Father-Mother that I was in that corridor when I was needed.
An experience of Heaven on earth? Oh, yes!
