God's Father-Mother Love

For several months, I have been praying to get a better understanding of what it means to reflect God’s Father-Mother love wherever and whenever these opportunities arise. Just recently, whilst visiting the Mother Church for the first time, I was given plenty of opportunities to put my prayers in to action, as well as feel God’s Fathering and Mothering expressed in so many tangible ways.

A family member had accompanied my husband and me on this trip, and from the outset it was clear that they were in great need of some gentle fathering and mothering in order for the trip to become comfortable and achievable for them. This was not in our original plan, but I was able to work with Mrs Eddy statements in Science and Health, “What blesses one blesses all” and “...thus tenderly expressing the fatherhood and motherhood of God.” The trip unfolded most harmoniously and was of great benefit to all concerned.

Entering The Mother Church for the first time as the bells played ‘O’er Waiting Harpstrings of the Mind’ was an unforgettable big hug. I felt so engulfed in God’s love and such gratitude for the motherly and fatherly love shown by Mrs Eddy. That evening’s testimony meeting felt like being part of one big family; indeed the First Reader best summed it up when he said ‘To all our international vistors - Welcome home!’

The very next day, whilst basking in this wonderful feeling of God’s parenting love and plan for all, I was considering the beauty of an indoor fountain in a museum/ house we were visiting. The sun was streaming through the window, playing on the water droplets. Just at that moment I felt a tap on my belt and looked down. There looking up was a little boy with big brown eyes, pointing excitedly at the fountain and then tapping my belt eagerly again, in order that he draw my attention to the beauty. He couldn’t speak a word of English but how his gentle, innocent joy touched me, demonstrating that nurturing love can come in all sorts of unexpected ways. Surely this was an active example of ‘God and His universal family, held in the gospel of Love’? (S+H)

Words cannot express what a wonderful experience this whole trip was for me or the great spiritual growth I have gained over the course of the last year. I am so grateful for all that I am learning in Christian Science.
