Launching Our Children Into Adulthood

I am particularly grateful this year for seeing so much progress in our family with both children starting jobs in their chosen careers and finding homes.

Last summer our grown up son came home from travelling and our daughter and her partner also came to live with us having finished at university. It was a real privilege to help support them as they searched for jobs and prepared themselves for taking up their chosen careers. I knew that as children of God they are always employed in the only job we really have to do, that of expressing qualities of God, Good and that the right opportunities would be there for them.

As they embarked on their search I was able to share some ideas from the perspective of Christian Science and found a very helpful sentinel article on employment. The article described employment as “utilizing the qualities of thought and the talents and abilities we each have for the benefit of others.” It also explained the need to see “divine Love as the basis of every aspect of employment—as the source of purposefulness, opportunity, ability, productivity, profit, and reward.” It pointed out that “Divine Love has no favorites.“ so no-one can lack the opportunity to put their abilities to use. The article also brought out how employment is an “expression of Love, an act of unselfishness. That it’s not about fulfilling ourselves or becoming wealthy, important, or powerful. It’s not even about earning a living; it’s about living”

As I pondered these ideas I appreciated the unique qualities each expressed as children of God and recognised that they were already employed. I dismissed any arguments that would try and say that there was a shortage of the right type of jobs or that a lack of experience could be an impediment. This understanding meant that we were able to offer support and encouragement and more importantly trust that the right way would open up. MBE assures us that “progress is a law” and I was able to dismiss discouragement with a conviction that God’s law is in operation.

It wasn’t long before each of them started jobs in their chosen careers.

Finding homes was the next step for each of them but there seemed to be a shortage of flats where they wished to live. I knew that  “whatever blesses one blesses all” and that “In my father’s house there are many mansions”. Well they were quite happy with flats rather than mansions but there seemed to be little available. We continued to know and trust in Love’s plan for all his children. One day my husband and I were passing the estate agent and heard a voice telling us to go in. We spoke to the agent who said there wasn’t much available but then she remembered that only that morning a flat that had been for sale had been made available to rent. The agent took us round straight away to see it and our daughter was able to take it up before it was advertised on the open market. It wasn’t long before our son also found suitable accommodation.

For these proofs and many more I am most grateful and for a growing understanding of Christian Science.
