"Precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little and there a little." Isaiah 28:10
A while ago I woke up with a very sore throat and the inability to breathe easily or swallow normally. This was very uncomfortable and I felt disheartened.
Initially, I tried to reason through how this might have happened; I was trying to figure out why I woke up feeling so bad. Then I decided to read the Bible Lesson for that week, which is found in the Christian Science Quarterly and includes passages from the Bible and from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. One of the citations included this sentence: “All substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, immortality, cause, and effect belong to God” (p. 275).
I realized I had been so silly trying to figure out a material cause and effect, rather than acknowledging that all cause and effect belong to God! I was aware that God is all-power and has made each of us whole. Before waking up to this fact, I had just been speculating.
It was really helpful to see just how fictional the cause and effect I had been imagining was. This helped me see the fact of God’s cause, which could produce only the effect of continual, frictionless flow and freedom. I prayed with ideas from the rest of the Lesson in full confidence that all cause and effect belong to God, and that in actuality there is no material effect and no material cause.
Soon after that, I felt totally free! I was able to continue with my day with no difficulty in my throat or breathing, and I was able to enjoy a meal I had been looking forward to.
This quick healing demonstrated for me how rejecting material reasoning and turning to what God knows as all good can bring freedom and joy.
